象牙は急激な温度変化や乾燥に弱いですが、適切なメンテナンスをすれば良い状態で長く使い続けることができます。
While ivory is vulnerable to dryness and rapid change of temperature, it can be kept in good condition for long with an appropriate care.

 

作品の種類 Types of craft

江戸象牙 Edo zoge (Edo-style ivory carvings)

象牙はゾウの門歯が伸びたもので、世界中で古くから使われている材料です。日本では江戸時代中期になって、武士から町人まで広く愛用されるようになりました。
Ivory is made from elephant's tusks. This material has been used around the world since the ancient times. During the middle of the Edo period in Japan, ivory pieces became widely available and favoured particularly among the samurai class and townspeople.

作品の特徴 Special features

象牙は人にやさしい風合いを持ち、使い込むほどに味が出る天然素材です。現在は入手しづらい貴重な材料ですのでより丁寧に加工し、小さな素材も品物に仕上げて無駄が出ないようにしています。
Ivory is a natural material with smooth texture and feel. It can improve the appearance through repeated use. Since ivory is highly valuable and hard to obtain these days I endeavour to work with the utmost care and efficiency, trying to use even small pieces of material avoiding waste.
